Ipad for Early Intervention

I’ve recently had some requests for iPad apps for early intervention. I’ve done some research and have found some great ones. Here’s a listing of my favorite early language learning apps:

1. Funimal Phonics ($0.99)

2. I Hear Ewe (Free)

3. Peekaboo (Free)

4. Splingo’s Language Universe ($2.99)

5. A Bee Sees (Free)

6. Story Time for Kids (Free)

7. Tap Tap Baby ($1.99)

8. Doodle Buddy (Free)

9. Toddler Jukebox (Free)

10. Talking Baby Hippo ($0.99)

Tips to using the ipad with your child:

  • I’m a big fan of technology in education. Children are so motivated by iPads and they can be used to facilitate learning if they are used appropriately. I always recommend that you limit your child’s time with the Ipad (15 minutes at a time). Try to explore these apps with your child. Take turns, use eye contact, focus on expressive and receptive language and joint attention with each app. Model and imitate the sounds in the animal apps, encourage your child to imitate. Turn off the sound feature when an app asks the child to identify objects (replace with your voice so you’re asking the child to point or touch an object). Although it’s visually stimulating and novel, technology should never replace active engagement through toy exploration and floor-time play. Have fun and as always, please let me know if you find any bugs in these apps or have great ones to add to my favorite list.  Don’t forget to child-proof your iPad!
